5 Soothing Saltwater Aquarium Modes: Relax & De-Stress Right at Home

In our everyday lives, we are constantly bombarded with sensory stimuli – from our devices, traffic, busy homes and offices, and work or family stress. Our brains need some downtime to recharge and wind down, but they rarely get enough of it. Studies have shown that being around free flowing water and aquariums gives our brains (and our senses) a rest from overstimulation; aquariums have also been proven to lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety and emotional agitation.

Being in a mindful state, where the brain is naturally relaxed yet still focused like it is when you’re watching an aquarium, benefits the mind and body on a number of different levels. Research has found a myriad of benefits associated with mindfulness – including relief from anxiety, pain, depression, and stress, as well as improving mental clarity, increasing focus, and aiding in better sleep.

It’s not just the sound of an aquarium that helps us relax. Visually identifying with the fish and watching the moving water paired with specific lighting helps us de-stress and wind down mentally as well.

Here are the five best LOOP modes to help you unwind, relax, and de-stress:

  1. Sunrise / Sunset

This is a particularly relaxing mode simply because of its color spectrum – a soft, soothing magenta. It emits enough blue to make your corals pop, but the yellows, pinks, and reds in your fish will really steal the show.
  2. FEED Mode

There’s something incredibly tranquil about the physical interaction with our fish when the pumps are off and everything is quieter. Watching the fish and corals feed is very visually satisfying and relaxing in and of itself.
  3. Rolling Cloud Cover

Watching gentle clouds roll across the aquarium is undoubtedly one of the most relaxing weather aspects of an aquarium. It isn’t loud, and the gentle hum of the water paired with the light show makes for a unique de-stressing experience.
  4. Full Storm

Putting our pumps into a pulsing wave mode and the lights into full storm with lighting is both relaxing and incredible to watch. The LPS corals bounce in the blue light spectrum and put on a great show; even just watching your plants move around in the aquarium can be calming.
  5. Random Cloud Cover

The slower lighting shifts of the random cloud cover mode make this a great effect to just have on in the background while you relax and let your mind rest. The sound of the bubbles really adds to the therapeutic effect of watching the tank while it’s in this mode.
  6. Owning and caring for an aquarium is a great way to bring the calming effects of nature right into your home; what’s your favorite LOOP mode to relax to?
